Do you have a pool, a large water …

Winmalee Rural Fire Brigade added 2 new photos.

Do you have a pool, a large water tank or a dam on your property. Could it be used for firefighting in a bushfire emergency ?

Under the Static Water Supply Program we will attend your property and carry out an assessment to see if it is suitable and we will doing this over the coming months in Winmalee, Yellow Rock and Hawkesbury Heights.

We have an opportunity to carry out some inspections this Saturday afternoon (weather permitting). If you are available at home this
Saturday afternoon please message the Brigade via this page or email us at info@winmaleerfs.com.au, noting your name, address and phone number and we will contact you. Thank you.

Update:

Colleen, good morning. A spa is not really suitable for a brigade tanker that requires a refill, however would be more than suitable for personal use. The Rural Fire Service website provides more information on what to do before, during and after a bushfire passes. A spa would provide a water source for putting out spot fires, etc, when it was safe to do so.

Most of us like a good thunderstorm. But with the thunder comes lightning. During Summer the Blue Mountains experience quiet a few thunderstorms with rain, but sometimes we get dry lightning meaning no rainfall or not substantial rainfall. Lightning can cause bushfires, especially dry lightning storms. After a storm keep an eye out for fires and if you do spot a fire dial 000 immediately.

Did you know – A layer of warm …

Winmalee Rural Fire Brigade added 2 new photos.

Did you know –
A layer of warm air sitting over a layer of cold air is called a temperature inversion. Inversions are common during the night and early morning when cool night air collects close to the ground. This arrangement of air is stable because cold air near the ground is heavy and tends to stay near the ground. The warm air above the inversion is lighter and tends to stay above the inversion. There are often strong winds in the warm air above inversions, but while the inversion lasts these winds cannot come down to ground level. As the sun heats the ground during the day, the inversion weakens and strong winds may begin to blow near the ground. This is one reason why many bushfires burn more fiercely in the afternoon, as happened with the fires in Hobart in 1967. Did you know – The greatest danger of Bush …

Did you know –
The greatest danger of Bush fires on the East Coast of NSW occurs after the dry winter and spring. The worst conditions occur when deep low-pressure systems near Tasmania bring strong, hot and dry, north-westerly winds to the coastal districts. The end of the fire season is determined by the onset of moister conditions, sometimes the result of a tropical cyclone developing near the Queensland coast

What to wear if you choose to Stay and Defend during a Bushfire –
Wear clothing made from natural fibres (cotton or wool), such as overalls or a long sleeved cotton shirt and cotton trousers or jeans. Wear leather boots and a wide-brimmed hat or safety helmet. Cotton or leather gardening gloves will protect your hands, and goggles or safety glasses will help keep sparks and embers out of your eyes. A good dust-mask will help protect your throat and lungs.
